Christmas in Provence
Traditions and festivities

christmas in PROVENCE :

dive into the Provençal traditions that light up Christmas

In Provence, the Christmas season is rich with unique traditions that begin as early as the start of December. These customs create a festive and welcoming atmosphere throughout the entire region.

- LA SAINTE-BARBE -

The start of the festivities

On December 4th, it is customary to plant wheat seeds in three small dishes, symbolizing the Holy Trinity. “Quand lou blad vèn bèn, tout vèn bèn” ("When the wheat grows well, everything goes well").

The seeds are planted on damp cotton, and if they grow well, it is a sign of prosperity.

- LES SANTONS -

The soul of the Provençal nativity scene

The nativity scene is adorned with santons, small figurines that represent not only biblical characters but also the traditional trades and iconic figures of Provence.

Tradition dictates that a new santon or accessory is added to the scene each year, enriching the display over time.

- THE CHRISTMAS TABLE -

A symbolic feast

The Christmas table in Provence is meticulously set, adhering to deeply rooted traditions. It features three layered white tablecloths of varying sizes and three candlesticks representing the past, present, and future. An extra place setting is always added to welcome an unexpected guest.

Lou Gros Soupa

On Christmas Eve, the festive meal is called "Lou Gros Soupa", a light dinner served before midnight mass. It typically consists of dishes made with vegetables and seafood, with soupe au pistou often taking center stage on the menu.

Les Thirteen Desserts

A beloved Provençal tradition, the 13 desserts symbolize Jesus and the 12 apostles. The selection can vary by family but typically includes:

• Pompe à l’huile d’olive (a sweet olive oil bread)
